I’m currently engineering lead for search at Zalando, Europe’s biggest fashion e-commerce platform, where I am leading a number of teams working on the search backend. I joined Zalando in August 2015.
Before Zalando, I was a machine learning researcher for quite a while, I did my Ph.D. back in 2005 on approximation theory for the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the kernel matrix, and then worked as a PostDoc in the group of Klaus-Robert Müller at Fraunhofer FIRST and TU Berlin. Google Scholar has some of my publications. Ironically, ever since I left academia, my citations are on the rise.
From 2009 to 2014 I also had a startup-on-the-side together with Leo Jugel first called TWIMPACT, later streamdrill, where we built a real-time data analysis machine based on approximate counting algorithms. We have the core algorithms open sourced.
